What is HyperSizer?

From Preliminary Design to Final Analysis

HyperSizer is design, analysis, and optimization software for composite and metallic structures; it is used throughout the design process, including certification. Originally developed at NASA and successfully deployed throughout the aerospace industry, the software produces practical, manufacturable designs with composite laminates while consistently reducing weight by 20 percent. Where Do I Begin?

Important: The following videos were created with a non-production version of the HyperSizer software. As a result some of the GUI forms may appear different. Furthermore, the FEM files referenced in the video are not provided with software the installation. For these reasons, it is recommended to watch the videos from beginning to end and then attempt to repeat the process using updated FEM files shipped with HyperSizer. These updated FEM files can be found in the C:\HyperSizer Data\Projects\Collier\_Training UM\Collier Wing Box\FEA folder. Please keep in mind that the analysis results will be different because the FEA files have been updated.

Early/Initial Sizing Optimization

Import a "smeared" FEM (allows stiffened panels to be modeled using a single plane of shell elements).
Optimize the composite laminates and stiffened panel cross sectional dimensions.
Export design data to CAD.

Advanced Sizing of a Wing Box

Perform the same process again using a smeared FEM, but this time with more sizing components in the chordwise direction.
Individual steps are performed in more detail.
The results are relevant, complete, and suitable for preliminary design review (PDR).
